G’Day! Today is Tuesday, so today is all about food. The cuisine and food culture of Australia is quite unique and very delicious!
Australians love to grill or barbecue. Since Martin and I were making dinner and not my husband, I decided to forgo the ‘barbie’. Instead we opted for Sausage rolls, fresh rocket and fruit salad.
Sausage rolls are a great example of the British influence in Australia and these with some paprika sprinkled on top are delish!
As a side dish we had ‘fresh rocket’, if you didn’t know rocket is another word for arugula! It was really a fresh spinach and arugula salad with fresh cracked black pepper, a lemon honey dressing (that martin helped make) and some parmesan cheese- it was wonderful! Even Martin ate some of the arugula and he typically runs away from anything green.
Finally we had some fruit salad- yummy yummy! Wiggles anyone?! Just me? okay…
I set martin up with a butter knife and a cutting board and let him go to town! I tried really hard not to ‘fix’ any of his cuts, some were too big or wonky but in the end HE made the fruit salad. He was so proud and he is still talking about it days later. We had bananas, blueberries, strawberries, mango, and oranges- all soft fruit so he could safely cut them.
It was a great meal and the left overs were a mean breakfast the following morning! I later learned that fruit salad is typically served after the meal as a desert of sorts, so we messed that part up. All in all, it was a very successful culinary adventure!
(aka arugula and spinach salad)
- 2 cups fresh rocket (arugula)
- 2 cups fresh baby spinach
- 1/4 cup fresh parmesan grated or shaved
- Fresh cracked pepper to taste
- Honey Lemon Salad Dressing
Combine all of the ingredients, minus the dressing and toss. Dress right before serving or have each diner add their own right before eating it.
Honey Lemon Salad Dressing
- 1/4 Cup Olive Oil
- 2 Tbs Lemon Juice
- 1/8 Cup White Wine Vinegar
- 1/4 Cup Honey
Put everything in the jar, shake and serve. *Separation is only natural, so give it a good shake every time you use it
- 1-2 bananas
- 1 cup strawberries
- 1/2 cup blueberries
- 1 mango
- 4 mandarin oranges
Cut each item into bite size pieces, toss and serve.
*I set my 3 year old up with a butter knife and each item one at a time- he was constantly supervised but I let him do all the cutting. In preparation for my son, I peeled the banana, oranges and mango so all he had to do was cut the flesh.
