Australia: Wednesday

Today was a day that Martin needed a break, he wasn’t feeling great and just wanted to play quietly.  Which is quite the step away from his usual off the wall, loud, imaginative and active little boy self.  So we played play dough and listened to music.

Traditional Australian folk music sounds similar to Irish, English and German music.  Some of the more well known Aussie folk songs are: Waltzing Matilda, Botany Bay and Kookaburra- you know, “kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he…” .

When you look further back in the country’s history you will learn about the Aboriginal or indigenous Australian music.  One of the best ways to expose younger listeners to a new style of music is play it while they play. So today while the kids played I put on some Aboriginal music and we listened to didgeridoos and other indigenous instruments.  It was such fun to have a new and unique soundtrack to our day.
