Kazakhstan: алма бәліші

Apples come from Kazakhstan. It’s true! The ancestor of the domestic apple is the Malus sieversii and it grows wild in the Tian Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan. So naturally we just had to make an apple pie.

I scoured the internet for an authentic Kazakh apple pie recipe and I found one picture over and over again, but sadly no recipe. Until finally I found one in Spanish!

Thanks to google translate and some trial and error I now have a new favorite apple pie!

Kazakhstan Apple Pie

4 apples
180 g of brown sugar, plus extra
1 Tbs lemon juice
4 eggs
120 g wheat flour
Icing sugar to decorate

Peel and core the apples, and cut into thin slices

In a large bowl combine the apples with the sugar and lemon juice.

In a separate bowl beat the eggs and add the flour.

Add the batter to the to the apples and mix.

Pour the mixture into a well buttered pie pan

Add a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar to the top as well as a few pieces of butter.

Bake at 180ºC or 350ºF for 35 minutes

Allow to cool some before dusting the top with powdered sugar. Slice and enjoy warm or cold.

    1. Turned out great! I had to bake for an additional 20 minutes, but I believe my pan was deeper than the one pictured. I didn’t peel the apples for added texture variety and added a bit of cinnamon to the flour and egg mixture. Delicious! I will definitely make this dish again. Thanks for sharing and translating!!
