Nasi Goreng is Indonesian fried rice, made uniquely Indonesian with one main ingredient- Kecap Manis. A type of sweet soy sauce, it can be found at most Asian grocery stores, I unfortunately do not have any international grocery stores near me. Thankfully you can make kecap manis at home!
Kecap Manis
If you can buy it, buy it- but if you’re like me and that’s not an option here’s how to make your own!
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup Soy Sauce
- 1/4 cup Brown Sugar
Method
In a sauce pan, combine the soy sauce and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves and cook until it starts to thicken. Remove it from the heat, it will thicken more as it cools.

Thats it!

I opted to add some carrots to my rice and instead of shrimp paste (couldn’t find it in my local stores) I used her recommendation of 1 Tbs of fish sauce.
I really enjoyed this and it was unique having sweet, salt, heat, and savory all together in one dish but it was harmonious!
